When actors talk about getting feedback on their films, they usually mean directors, producers, or test audiences.

For Ryan Gosling, the most important feedback came from two much younger critics his daughters.

While working on the upcoming sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, Gosling revealed that his daughters were quietly involved in the filmmaking process from the sidelines. And not just in the “watching dad’s movie” kind of way they actually helped him shape parts of the performance.

In fact, by the time the film was nearing completion, they had already seen multiple versions of it.

His Toughest and Most Honest Audience

Gosling, who shares daughters Esmeralda and Amada with partner Eva Mendes, joked that the girls have watched “so many cuts” of the film during editing.

For him, their reactions were priceless.

Children, after all, don’t filter their opinions and Gosling seemed to appreciate exactly that. Their responses gave him a genuine sense of what worked, what felt exciting, and what didn’t quite land.

And in a way, their feedback mattered more than traditional reviews ever could.

When the Alien Needed a Voice

Their involvement didn’t stop at early screenings.

During filming, Gosling often had to act opposite a character who wasn’t physically there an alien named Rocky. Since the creature would be added later using visual effects, many of those scenes required Gosling to react to… well, nothing.

That’s where his daughters came in.

At times, they would read Rocky’s dialogue through an earpiece so Gosling could respond naturally while filming. The result? Some of the laughter and reactions in those scenes are reportedly genuine, because he was actually reacting to his kids improvising off camera.

It turned a technically complex sci-fi scene into something unexpectedly wholesome.

The Glasses That Came From a Kid’s Suggestion

The girls even had opinions about Gosling’s character.

At one point, one of his daughters suggested he looked “smarter in glasses.” The actor liked the idea so much that he incorporated it into the character he plays in the film Ryland Grace, a science teacher who suddenly finds himself responsible for saving humanity.

Sometimes the simplest creative notes are the best ones.

The Story Behind the Film

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the same author behind The Martian.

The story follows Ryland Grace, a man who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is only to realize he’s on a mission to save Earth from an extinction-level cosmic threat.

Along the way, he forms an unlikely friendship with Rocky, an alien from another planet who is trying to solve the same problem for his own species.

It’s a story about science, survival, and unexpected friendships across galaxies.

A Film That Became a Family Affair

For Gosling, Project Hail Mary ended up being more than just another role. It became a project he could share with his family while it was still being made.

Between watching early edits, voicing alien dialogue, and even influencing costume choices, his daughters unknowingly became part of the creative process.

Hollywood may run on big budgets and blockbuster ideas but sometimes, the most honest creative notes come from the smallest voices.

And in Gosling’s case, they were sitting right at home.
