Na Hong-jin is planning a sequel to his highly anticipated science-fiction thriller Hope, even before the film’s official release, according to reports from the Cannes Film Festival.
The South Korean filmmaker, best known for critically acclaimed films such as The Wailing and The Chaser, said he is developing a broader cinematic universe around “Hope” as interest in the project continues to grow internationally.
The film has generated significant attention ahead of its premiere due to its ambitious scale, star-studded cast, and blend of science fiction, horror, and thriller elements.
According to Reuters, Na said he already has ideas for continuing the story beyond the first film, signaling long-term franchise ambitions for the project.
“Hope” features an international cast including Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and several prominent South Korean actors, reflecting the growing global reach of Korean cinema.
The film is set in a remote port town where residents confront mysterious, terrifying events linked to an unknown presence.
Industry analysts say the project represents another major step in the expanding global influence of South Korean entertainment following the worldwide success of Korean films and streaming series in recent years.
