Chelsea FC secured a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals, currently underway in the United States, with a 2-1 victory over Brazil’s Palmeiras on Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 16th minute. Palmeiras equalized in the 53rd minute through Estêvão Willian, an 18-year-old who is slated to transfer to Chelsea later this summer. The decisive goal for the English side came in the 83rd minute, credited as an own goal by Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton after a deflection.
Chelsea will now face another Brazilian club, Fluminense, in the semi-finals. Fluminense advanced after a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in their quarter-final match.
