Paris Saint-Germain met Spanish side Girona on September 18, who participated in their first-ever Champions League campaign.
The Catalonian team kept their nerves throughout 90 minutes until their goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, made a fatal mistake that cost them the game despite proving to be a challenge for the Parisian team who struggled to create goal-scoring chances.
Gazzaniga, attempting to catch a low-driven cross in the six-yard box by Nuno Mendes, let the ball slip through his hands, shifting its direction goalward. The game’s only goal was counted as an own goal registered under the Argentinian’s name.
Girona seemingly looked to hold PSG to a draw before Gazzaniga’s error. The goalkeeper however, made five saves throughout the cagey game, including an extraordinary stop with his legs.
Girona will be hosting Feyenoord in their next game on Wednesday, October 2, while Paris is set to travel to London to face Arsenal on Tuesday, October 1.
