Location and Infrastructure
Situated just 10 nautical miles from the busy international shipping route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, Vizhinjam boasts inherent locational advantages. Its natural depth of 18–20 meters close to shore eliminates the need for capital dredging, enabling it to accommodate ultra-large container ships requiring 20 m+ drafts. The port’s curvilinear coast also mitigates tsunami impact and minimizes maintenance costs due to mild erosion.
Inauguration of the Vizhinjam Port in Kerala is significant for India’s maritime sector. People have been waiting for this port for many years. It will boost trade, commerce and will be particularly beneficial for Kerala’s economy.

Economic Impact
Currently, approximately 75% of India’s maritime cargo is transshipped at foreign ports such as Singapore, Colombo, or Dubai, resulting in a loss of $220 million in annual revenue. Vizhinjam’s upgraded capacity is expected to serve major global shipping routes connecting the U.S., Europe, Africa, and East Asia, reducing reliance on foreign ports and retaining revenue within the country.
Capacity and Future Expansion
Vizhinjam Port, which began partial operations in July 2023 and has already processed approximately 250 container ships, is set for a major expansion. According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the plans, a further investment of ₹9,500 crore will significantly increase the port’s capacity, tripling its handling volume and positioning it as a key global transshipment hub.
