The UAE is gearing up for Christmas and New Year festivities. While there’s a lot to look forward to in terms of year-end business closures and developments, there’s much in between. And then, of course, there’s something called “self-care”. With so much information available online, here are a few minimalist routine tips for 2025 to help you stay focused and refreshed.

While social media often portrays self-care as an elaborate process, filled with “everything showers” and pricey products, Dr. Shruti Kakar, Aesthetic Dermatologist & Dermatosurgeon, Expert Consultant, Vatika, explains that this doesn’t have to be complicated or costly.

What is Minimalism in Hair Care?

The sheer number of products available nowadays can be overwhelming. Consumers often feel confused about what to rely on and what is best for their hair.

“The thing about hair is, no two heads of hair are the same, and no hair care routine will be identical. A minimalist hair care routine focuses on quality over quantity, opting for a few essential products that are specifically tailored to our unique hair type. The goal here is to achieve healthy, manageable hair without the overwhelming number of steps. Just like minimalist skincare routines, which prioritize key ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, a minimalist hair care routine focuses on products that provide moisture, protection, and nourishment,” stated Dr. Shruti.

Why Less is More?

With busy schedules, an elaborate hair care routine can quickly become unfeasible and time-consuming, leading to a hair existential or “hair-stential” crisis that disrupts consistency.

“The minimalist haircare routine fits into our busy lifestyle while giving the hair exactly what it needs while also reducing waste. The Empties Haul Challenge on TikTok encourages us to finish our products before buying new ones, and having just the essentials makes it easier to stay on track,” remarked Dr. Kakar.

Stay Hairdrated

A key focus of minimalist hair care is hydration. Healthy, vibrant hair is often a reflection of proper care, and one of the most crucial aspects is moisturization. But why is it so important?

Dr. Shruti further noted, “Moisturized hair has better elasticity, making it less prone to breakage. This is especially important for curly or textured hair, as it is often more fragile. Plus, it improves manageability, reducing tangles and knots, making your hair care routine even more seamless.”

She elaborated that scalp health has become a top priority in the haircare world; a well-hydrated scalp reduces dryness and flakiness, which ultimately helps grow healthier hair.

Choosing the Right Products

Minimalist hair care isn’t just about cutting products, but choosing the right ones. In the Middle East, the severe climate presents unique challenges, and choosing the right products that address the region’s specific issues is key.

The heat along with the frequent exposure to air conditioning, can quickly leave hair dehydrated and prone to frizz. Hard water, common in the region, also leads to mineral buildup on the hair and scalp, worsening dryness and making it harder to retain moisture.

Dr. Shruti advises looking for products that offer hydration, protection, and nourishment in one. Hair oils enriched with ingredients like argan oil and coconut oil are perfect for nourishing the hair and scalp while also acting as a heat protectant and frizz fighter.
