The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has called on the European Union to take stronger action in response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging immediate sanctions against Israel, including the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
In a letter addressed to EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, the ETUC demanded “decisive and principled” measures to push for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as well as full and unimpeded humanitarian aid access for Palestinians in Gaza.
The confederation stressed that the EU must act on its own findings of violations and apply pressure by invoking Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which conditions cooperation on respect for human rights and democratic principles. The call also includes ending all trade and economic relations with Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The letter was co-signed by the General Secretaries of UNI Europa, EPSU, industriAll Europe, ETF, EUROCOP, EFFAT, EFBWW, ETUCE-CSEE, and EFJ, collectively representing more than 45 million workers across Europe.
ETUC stated that Europe holds the responsibility to use every tool available to help secure a permanent ceasefire, protect civilians, and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those most in need.
