In a significant move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing repeated breaches of its obligations under the ICC constitution. The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, following a thorough review and extensive engagement with stakeholders over the past year.
The ICC described the suspension as a “necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game”, while assuring that the decision would not impact athletes or the country’s participation in upcoming events. The United States men’s team will continue to compete, including in the T20 World Cup 2026 and preparations leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with team management temporarily overseen by the ICC.
Reasons Behind The Suspension
- According to the ICC, the suspension stems from “repeated and continued breaches” by USA Cricket, including:
Failure to implement a functional governance structure.
- Lack of progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

- Actions causing reputational damage to cricket in the US and globally.

USA Cricket had previously been placed on notice at the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting for non-compliance and given 12 months to rectify these issues, which, according to the ICC, were not adequately addressed.
What This Means for U.S. Cricket
Despite the suspension, the ICC emphasized that athletes and competitions will not be affected, and the organization will work closely with USA Cricket to ensure continuity in international events. The move serves as a reminder of the importance of strong governance and accountability in the development of cricket worldwide.
