Rescue operations are underway in northern Nigeria after a massive boulder collapsed onto a mine during heavy rainfall, killing at least 18 people and leaving many others missing, according to local reports.
The incident occurred on Thursday in Zamfara State, near Kadauri village in the Maru district, when a large rock fell onto miners working in the pit.
“We have managed to pull out 18 dead bodies from the pit and five other survivors who sustained various degrees of injuries,” said Sani Lawwali, a miner from Kadauri who participated in the rescue.
Lawwali added that around a dozen miners remained trapped underground, and their condition was still unknown.
