Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins is on course to make his much-awaited return during the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, starting December 4, after being sidelined with a lower back injury since July.

Cummins, who last played during the West Indies Test series, will miss the opening Ashes clash in Perth on November 21, as he continues his recovery. The fast bowler has resumed bowling from a reduced run-up and says his rehabilitation is progressing according to plan, giving Australian fans hope of a timely comeback.

With Cummins unavailable for the first Test, Steve Smith will step in as captain — marking another return to leadership for the former skipper, who has led Australia in crucial moments since his reinstatement.

Cummins was one of Australia’s key performers in the 2023 Ashes series, claiming 18 wickets as his side retained the urn with a 2-2 draw in England. His presence will once again be pivotal as Australia look to maintain dominance on home soil.

In his absence, the experienced pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland is expected to spearhead the attack in Perth.

As the countdown to the second Test begins, all eyes will be on Cummins’ recovery. A fully fit captain could provide the spark Australia needs as the battle for cricket’s most celebrated trophy heats up.
