The Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica on Wednesday reported in its fourth quarter report that its Meta artificial intelligence glasses sales had increased more than three times last year.
The French-Italian eyewear brand reported selling over 7 million AI glasses in the previous year. This is compared to the 2 million that the company sold in 2023 and 2024, respectively, as its quarterly report published last February showed.
The figure reported on Wednesday encompasses the sale of smart glasses under the brands of Ray-Ban and Oakley, the latter of which was announced in June.
The success of the smart glasses, which the company has recently shown, is the newest indication that wearable AI devices are becoming increasingly popular among consumers.
The company said in a release, “Our success in wearables is helping to propel the AI-glasses revolution, with our iconic brands being a powerful driver of demand.” CNBC stated that EssilorLuxottica has been collaborating with the social media firm on the wearable devices since 2019.
The glasses were introduced in September 2021, the first edition of the glasses by the two companies, and the device did not receive much attention until the second-generation version in 2023.
EssilorLuxottica and Meta launched a new version of Ray-Ban in September, which can be controlled by hand movements and neural technology. That device retails for $799 and features a small display in one of the lenses.
Meta announced in January that it was delaying the global release of the Ray-Ban Display glasses, which were initially planned to be released in early 2026, because of “unprecedented” demand in the U.S.
The report by Bloomberg last month stated that to meet the increasing demand, Meta and EssilorLuxottica were considering doubling their production to a minimum of 20 million by the end of this year.
Meta has also stated that it will collaborate with the glasses manufacturer, and also offered a long-term partnership deal to “collaborate into the next decade” in 2024.
