Exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products from the South Korea more than doubled in February compared with the same month last year, driven largely by a surge in semiconductor shipments amid the global boom in artificial intelligence (AI), according to data released Thursday.

Overseas shipments of ICT products totaled US$33.6 billion in February, up from $16.5 billion a year earlier, based on figures compiled by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This represents a sharp rise from the previous year despite the month having fewer working days and marks the highest export value ever recorded for February.

ICT imports also increased, climbing 19.6 percent year-on-year to $13 billion. As a result, the sector recorded a trade surplus of $20.5 billion.

“ICT exports accounted for 49.8 percent of the country’s total exports of $67.45 billion in the month, reaffirming the sector’s reputation as the key industry leading the Korean economy’s growth,” the ministry said in a release.
