Bangladesh is set to sign a deal to purchase 14 aircraft from Boeing, marking a strategic shift away from Airbus as the country recalibrates both its aviation and trade priorities.

The agreement, expected to be signed in Dhaka, will supply a mix of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft to national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines as it looks to modernize its fleet and expand capacity in response to rising passenger demand.

While financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, officials said deliveries will take place in phases. The order concludes a prolonged contest between Boeing and Airbus, both of which have been competing for a larger foothold in South Asia’s fast-growing aviation market.

The decision represents a departure from earlier plans under the previous government of Sheikh Hasina, which had approved the purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft, though no final agreement was reached. Following political changes in 2024, the interim administration has shifted its preference toward Boeing.

Beyond fleet requirements, the move is also shaped by broader economic considerations. Bangladesh is seeking to ease pressure from a trade imbalance of approximately $6 billion with the United States, while avoiding potential tariff measures that could impact its export-driven economy, particularly the garment sector.

The fleet expansion comes at a time when Bangladesh is upgrading its aviation infrastructure to support growing travel demand. A new terminal at Dhaka’s main airport is expected to enhance capacity, driven by a rising middle class and a large overseas workforce.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which has been operating for over five decades, currently maintains a fleet of more than 20 aircraft, predominantly Boeing models, including a significant share of wide-body jets alongside regional turboprop aircraft.

The latest order reinforces Boeing’s position in the Bangladeshi market and signals how geopolitical and trade dynamics are increasingly influencing large-scale aviation procurement decisions.
