Dubai Design Week, celebrating its 10th anniversary, brought together over 500 designers from emerging talents to global icons, showcasing the pinnacle of design across various verticals. A vibrant hub of innovation, the event offered deep insights into art, design, and culture, with plenty of food explorations as well. Here are the key highlights as the event wraps up:

IMR Tower by Christopher M. Kaltenbach

Christopher M. Kaltenbach, the visionary behind IMR Tower, captivated visitors as they were eager to learn more about his showcase. In an exclusive interaction with The Finance 360, he shared that his research into insect behavior and sustainable practices inspired the concept of the unique tower structure in the UAE.

“The idea began almost 15 years ago. I was aware of the issues with locusts and became interested in how countries had dealt with them in the past. I discovered that radar towers exist to detect insects in the sky. When I discussed this concept with my colleagues in the engineering program, they told me that we can detect millimeter-sized insects in the air,” he said.

Inspired by radar technology, Kaltenbach and his team are now working on developing a system to identify and track insects in the sky. This innovative approach aims to protect crops from invasive species and help agricultural authorities take preventive measures.

ReRoot

ReRoot reimagines emergency housing by creating sustainable, resilient shelters for displaced communities through an ecological approach. Dima Al Srouri, Dalia Hamait, Andy Cartier, and Rosa Hamalainen are the visionaries behind this concept.

Dima told us, “The four of us developed this together and it’s a prototype for a shelter in response to the displacement crisis that’s happening in our region, but also more widespread. The idea is that it’s bio-based, so it can go back into the soil and plants, further enriching it.”

The team came up with the idea in May and in no time, it became a success. ReRoot is blending tradition with innovation by using mycelium and local palm waste to create sustainable, eco-friendly shelters. These structures, inspired by traditional architecture, are built in harmony with nature, empowering communities and enriching the environment.
