Saudi Aramco has declared that it has already recorded tremendous milestones in its expansion plan to increase the production of gas, with production commencing at the Jafurah field, the biggest unconventional gas field in the Middle East, and the commencement of operations at the Tanajib Gas Plant, which is one of the largest gas plants in the world.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the oil giant expects to increase its sales gas production capacity by about 80 percent by 2030, relative to the 2021 levels of production of about 6 million barrels of oil equivalent per day of total gas and other related liquids production.
This is projected to produce more operating cash flows between $12 and $15 billion in the year 2030, with the demand of prices of sales gas and liquids in the future.
President and CEO of Saudi Aramco, Amin Al-Nasser, said, “We are proud to commence production at the Jafurah field and begin operations at the Tanajib Gas Plant. These are major achievements for Saudi Aramco and the future of energy in the Kingdom. Our ambitious gas program is expected to become a key source of profitability.”
He confirmed that these mega-projects will help to fulfill the rising domestic gas demand, the industrialization and development of various sectors of the country, as well as the high-value liquids.
Al-Nasser thanked Saudi Aramco to the support, trust, and concern shown by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and his royal highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the crown prince and prime minister, who have made the most significant contribution to the successes and great projects that the company has undergone, to serve the Kingdom vision 2030.
The extracted gas in the Jafurah field is projected to propel the Kingdom in its growth goals with regard to energy, artificial intelligence, major industries, and petrochemicals, which is likely to be a significant boost to the Kingdom’s economy and reinforcement of its status as one of the top ten gas suppliers globally.
Saudi Aramco commenced initial production of unconventional shale gas utilizing the Jafurah field in December 2025, and technology was central to unlocking the possibility of the Jafurah field and making it a worldwide model of unconventional gas production.
The project has been using technology since its inception to aid in the reduction of drilling and stimulation costs and increase the well productivity, which has added to its bright economic outlook.
Jafurah region is estimated to be 17000 sq km and estimated to have 229 trillion standard cubic feet of raw gas and 75 billion barrels of condensates.
The Jafurah field project will generate sales gas of 2 billion standard cubic feet per day, ethane of 420 million standard cubic feet per day, and about 630,000 barrels per day of gas liquids and condensates by 2030.
The Tanajib Gas Plant is one of the pillars in the strategy of Aramco to expand its gas processing capacities and diversify its energy products to support long-term economic growth.
It started operations in December 2025, with an initial raw gas capacity of 2.6 billion standard cubic feet per day projected to be reached in 2026. The Tanajib Plant began operations along with the initiation of production under the Marjan field expansion and development program.
The plant has been characterized by its digitalization, higher levels of operational efficiency, abilities to undertake complicated tasks, and maximum utilization of resources. It refines raw gas that is connected with crude oil production in the offshore fields of Marjan and Zuluf.
The gas expansion is also likely to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, which will result in high added value, and this will make Aramco a sure and steady energy source.
It is also useful in satisfying the increasing need for natural gas and improving its availability to the national industries.
The expansion strategy promotes the intention to reach the optimal energy mix to generate electricity locally, the liquid fuel displacement program of the Kingdom, which will positively affect the environment, and the goal of having a net-zero emission by 2060, the reinforcement of energy security, and the creation of a more diversified national economy.
