Solar power in Germany produced substantially more electricity in 2025, with its share of domestic power generation rising to about 18 percent, up from 14 percent in 2024, the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) reported on Monday.
This increase meant that photovoltaic power surpassed lignite, which contributed roughly 14 percent, and natural gas, at around 16 percent, as sources of electricity generation, the association added.
The data are based on figures from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. Wind power remained Germany’s leading source of electricity, accounting for 27 percent of total generation.
Preliminary annual statistics show that over 5.5 million installed photovoltaic systems generated approximately 87 terawatt hours of electricity in 2025. This was about 15 terawatt hours more than in 2024, setting another record high for the country.
