In a move that has stunned diplomatic observers, US President Donald Trump’s heated confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office is being viewed as a calculated political maneuver. Many analysts believe the exchange was a deliberate attempt by the Trump administration to discredit Zelensky and remove him as an obstacle to upcoming geopolitical developments.

Whether orchestrated or not, Moscow reacted with enthusiasm to the public spat, interpreting it as a sign that US-Russia relations could soon improve. Behind closed doors, discussions about a potential Trump-Putin summit, long considered a possibility, are reportedly being fast-tracked.

US-Russia Talks Gain Momentum

While nothing has been formally announced, sources indicate that negotiations aimed at strengthening US-Russia ties are accelerating. Talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took place last month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, without Ukraine’s involvement. CNN has learned that preparations are now underway for a second round, possibly to be hosted in another Gulf nation.

Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s lead economic envoy to the discussions, confirmed that cooperation could extend to energy agreements, though no specifics have been released. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reports that there have been efforts to involve American investors in reviving the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Germany halted following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dmitriev framed the evolving relationship in grand terms, calling for US-Russia collaboration on “investment, economic growth, AI breakthroughs,” and even joint scientific projects like “Mars exploration.” He shared a futuristic computer graphic on Elon Musk’s X platform, depicting a hypothetical US-Russia-Saudi Mars mission aboard what appeared to be a SpaceX rocket.

Economic and Strategic Shifts

The potential for economic partnerships with Russia, which holds the world’s fourth-largest reserves of rare earth minerals, appears to align with President Trump’s deal-making approach. “Trump’s business acumen crushes Biden’s narratives. The attempt to defeat Russia collapsed,” Dmitriev posted on X, further fueling speculation about the Trump administration’s pivot toward Moscow.

Yet, the rapid diplomatic shift suggests that the recalibration of US-Russia ties goes beyond economic incentives. By aligning more closely with the Kremlin, the Trump administration risks distancing itself from traditional Western allies, marking a significant departure from Washington’s long-standing foreign policy stance.

A New Global Order?

Even the Kremlin, seemingly surprised by the speed of events, has taken note. “The new (US) administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations. This largely coincides with our vision,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview on Russian state television.

However, Trump’s motivations remain a subject of debate. Some speculate that Washington views Russia as a potential counterweight to China in a future geopolitical confrontation, while others dismiss such theories as misplaced.

Regardless of the reasoning, the historically strained relationship between the U.S. and Russia appears to be entering an uncharted phase.
