A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on the afternoon of May 31, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers beneath the surface.
While the tremor was strong, the JMA confirmed that no tsunami warning has been issued. Authorities also reported that there were no immediate signs of damage or casualties. Monitoring continues as local officials assess the situation.
