Astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere begins in the final third of December, specifically on December 22, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

During winter, the Siberian high-pressure system is the dominant surface-level weather system, extending toward the Arabian Gulf region. It is often accompanied by northwesterly winds that can become active at times, or by northeasterly winds. These conditions allow cold air masses to move into the country, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly at night and during the early morning hours.

In some inland and mountainous regions, temperatures may fall below 0°C.

Throughout the winter season, the country is also influenced by several low-pressure systems originating from the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, as well as by extensions of low-pressure systems from the east. These systems contribute to increased cloud cover and rainfall. Fog can also form under stable atmospheric conditions, high humidity and light winds, especially in the early morning.

The UAE’s varied geography, including the Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea to the east and the Empty Quarter desert creates diverse local weather patterns, resulting in differing winter conditions across the country.

In inland desert areas, temperatures are generally cool to cold at night and in the early morning, becoming mild during the daytime. Mountainous and highland areas experience generally cool conditions most of the time, with cold temperatures at night and early morning due to higher elevations; for instance, Jebel Jais rises to around 1,800 metres. Coastal regions typically experience moderate weather throughout much of the winter.

Along the coast, most winter days are mild, with sea wave heights ranging from one to two feet, providing favourable conditions for marine activities and water sports.

Intermittent winter rainfall improves outdoor conditions, although heavy rain in certain areas can cause runoff in mountain valleys. Authorities advise exercising caution and avoiding wadis during such events.

Winds are generally light to moderate during winter, supporting outdoor activities and camping, with stronger winds occurring only on a limited number of days.

Relative humidity levels are usually comfortable, though higher humidity combined with calm winds can lead to fog formation in the early morning hours.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology, the UAE’s winter climate and diverse weather conditions allow for a wide range of sports and recreational activities.

Average winter climate in the UAE:

  • Average maximum temperature: 24–27°C
  • Average minimum temperature: 14–16°C
  • Average relative humidity: 55–64%
  • Average wind speed: 11–13 km/h
