Mitsubishi Power, a power solution brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has won a significant contract to provide advanced gas turbine technology for Qatar’s Facility E Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP).

A contract has been given in collaboration with Samsung C&T Engineering and Construction Group, the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor engaged by the Ras Abu Fontas Power Company, and in association with the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation.

Within the agreement, Mitsubishi Power will provide its hydrogen-ready M701JAC gas turbines, which are characterized by high efficiency, performance, and feasibility in operation. It is the initial installation of M701JAC gas turbine technology in Qatar and serves to help the nation shift to lower-carbon power generation.

Facility E IWPP is a strategic infrastructure project of the State of Qatar situated in the Ras Abu Fontas area, some 25 kilometers to the south of Doha.

The plant will provide 2.4 gigawatts (GW) of electricity when in operation, which will cover approximately 20 percent of the national grid capacity in Qatar, as well as 495,000 tonnes per day of desalinated water to satisfy increased demands for power and water.

The project is aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, and the national decarbonization strategy in general, which is focused on minimizing carbon emissions and thus boosting the proportion of cleaner and more efficient sources of energy in the national energy mix.

President of Middle East & North Africa at Mitsubishi Power, Khalid Salem, said, “Qatar has long been a key partner for Mitsubishi Power, and we are honored to play a pivotal role in supporting the country’s ambitious energy goals. As one of the world’s leading LNG hubs, Qatar’s continued growth and economic development are intrinsically tied to its energy infrastructure. The Facility E IWPP project is a significant step in addressing Qatar’s rising energy demand while ensuring the stability and resilience of its power grid. Mitsubishi Power’s hydrogen-ready M701JAC gas turbines will provide Qatar with highly efficient, reliable, and flexible power generation solutions that synchronize with renewable energy sources. This partnership reflects our long-term commitment to the country and its energy transition, reinforcing our shared vision for a low-carbon, sustainable future. We are proud to contribute to Qatar’s National Vision 2030, further strengthening our legacy of delivering cutting-edge technologies to meet the dynamic energy needs of the region.”

President of KAHRAMAA, Eng. Abdulla Bin Ali Al-Theyab, added, “KAHRAMAA, through the adoption of the Facility E project utilizing hydrogen-ready M701JAC gas turbines supplied by Mitsubishi Power to the project company, represents a pivotal step in ensuring grid stability, which helps strengthen the State of Qatar’s electricity energy security, underpins the nation’s commitment to delivering sustainable and reliable electricity energy to its citizens, residents, and industrial sectors, meets future electricity needs, and maintains high levels of reliability and performance required by the State, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”

In a separate agreement, Mitsubishi Power has entered into a long-term service agreement with Ras Abu Fontas Power Company in addition to supplying the gas turbines. The deal includes the supply of parts, repairs, and continuous services to maintain high availability, reliability, and performance over the lifecycle of operation of the facility.

Facility E IWPP will commence commercial operations in the year 2028, and this will enhance the energy security of Qatar in addition to the long-term sustainability and economic development goals.

With the ongoing progress of decarbonization and energy transition programs in the regional markets, Mitsubishi Power reiterated its promise to provide a dependable, innovative, and efficient power supply that enables the Middle East to realize its long-term objectives of a robust and sustainable energy future.
