Burjeel Medical City (BMC), the flagship hospital of Burjeel Holdings, has unveiled the Burjeel Eye Institute to address rising demand for advanced eye care services in Abu Dhabi. The specialised institute provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment solutions for a wide range of eye conditions, offering personalised and holistic care in line with international standards for patients across all age groups.

The launch was attended by Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Burjeel Holdings, Khaled Ateeq Aldhaheri, Chief Executive Officer of Daman, Abdulaziz Jaber Mohammed Al Shareef, Deputy Director of the Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police, Khawla Al Nasseri, Quality Assurance Director at the Department of Health, and Mujtaba Ali Khan, Chief Executive Officer of Burjeel Medical City.

The institute is led by Murad Manea Alobthani, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of the Burjeel Eye Institute, and aims to enhance access to specialised ophthalmic care in the emirate amid increasing prevalence of age-related eye diseases, diabetes-related complications, and retinal disorders.

Alobthani said the institute marks a major advancement in ophthalmic services in Abu Dhabi, noting that it focuses on delivering comprehensive care supported by the latest diagnostic and surgical technologies, with a strong emphasis on patient safety and high-quality outcomes. He added that the institute is designed to preserve vision, improve quality of life, and offer care comparable to leading international centres, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

The Burjeel Eye Institute covers a wide range of subspecialties, including cataract and refractive surgery, retinal and vitreous diseases, glaucoma treatment, corneal and ocular surface conditions, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, oculoplastic surgery, and optic nerve disorders.

The facility is equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies, such as state-of-the-art laser systems, high-resolution imaging for the retina and optic nerve, and fully equipped operating theatres that meet the highest safety and quality standards. These capabilities enable customised treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.

Ali Khan said the launch reinforces Burjeel Medical City’s role in strengthening the UAE’s healthcare ecosystem and aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to provide world-class, patient-focused specialised medical services.

The institute’s medical team includes Emirati consultants across key ophthalmic subspecialties, supported by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in laser vision correction, retinal care, paediatric ophthalmology, and glaucoma management.

During the launch, the institute also announced a partnership with Spain-based Oftalvist, a leading international ophthalmology group. A memorandum of understanding was signed by Alobthani and Juan Alvarez de Toledo to promote knowledge sharing and clinical collaboration.
