Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed the resolution issued by the United Nations Security Council condemning what it described as Iran’s serious military actions against GCC member states and the Jordan.
Albudaiwi stated that the international condemnation, which received an unprecedented level of global support, clearly demonstrates that Iran violated international laws, norms, and conventions by targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure, and other non-military sites in GCC countries and Jordan.
He noted that the resolution was co-sponsored by 136 UN member states, reflecting broad international recognition of the gravity of the Iranian attacks on the sovereignty of the GCC states and Jordan. He added that the resolution also acknowledged their legal right to respond under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which affirms the right of states to self-defence individually or collectively when faced with armed aggression, allowing them to take necessary measures to protect their sovereignty, security, and stability.
The Secretary-General further explained that the Security Council resolution reaffirmed strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of all GCC member states and Jordan.
He added that the resolution also emphasized the strategic importance of the Gulf region to international peace and security, as well as its critical role in maintaining global economic stability. It also reaffirmed the right of navigation for ships traveling to and from ports and facilities of coastal states that are not involved in hostilities.
Albudaiwi concluded by expressing appreciation to the representatives of the GCC countries and Jordan for introducing the resolution and coordinating international efforts that led to its adoption.
