The Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi has ramped up efforts under its ongoing campaign, “Your Home, Your Responsibility,” to tackle residential overcrowding and improve living standards across the emirate.
Launched in March as part of the “Year of the Community 2025” initiative, the campaign focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of overcrowded housing and encouraging compliance with property occupancy regulations. Abu Dhabi City Municipality has begun targeted inspections to ensure a safer and more organised residential environment.

Authorities clarified that the campaign prioritises education over penalties, with warnings issued before fines are imposed. Violations can incur fines starting at AED 5,000 and reaching up to AED 1 million for serious breaches.
Overcrowding is defined as housing more individuals in a unit than it is designed to accommodate, which can pose safety risks and violate public decency laws. The Department urged residents to avoid sub-leasing, rent only through registered properties in the Tawtheeq system, and follow parking regulations under Mawaqif.
Citizens and landlords are encouraged to report violations via the TAMM platform, reinforcing the shared responsibility to maintain safe and dignified living spaces in Abu Dhabi.
