Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to enhance the emirate’s public bus network as part of its wider plan to encourage more residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
A key highlight of this plan is the introduction of six new dedicated bus and taxi lanes, covering 13 kilometres. With this expansion, the total length of such lanes across Dubai will reach 20 kilometres. The move is expected to drive a 10% increase in passenger numbers, improve bus arrival times by 42%, and cut journey durations by 41%, contributing to reduced traffic congestion and improved commuter experience.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the importance of seamless connectivity: “We aim to improve connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas by seamlessly integrating the bus service with the Dubai Metro. Buses serve as a vital link to other modes of transport, such as the metro, tram, and taxis.”
Al Tayer added that the lane expansion initiative is part of a larger strategy to boost the reliability and attractiveness of public transport across the emirate. It also supports broader sustainability and mobility goals by improving access to mass transit and reducing road congestion.
Currently, Dubai’s public bus network is extensive, covering approximately 88% of the city. The fleet of 1,390 buses operates across 187 routes—including metro link services, intercity routes, and seasonal lines to destinations such as Global Village—completing 11,000 daily trips and transporting more than 500,000 passengers each day.
“In 2024, the number of public bus users had reached 188 million passengers, marking an 8% increase compared to 2023,” Al Tayer noted. “The on-time arrival of buses exceeds 77%.”
The RTA’s growing use of smart systems and artificial intelligence has further enhanced the operational efficiency of Dubai’s mass transit, helping reduce costs, improve punctuality, and elevate customer satisfaction.
Last year, the authority launched nine new express routes, introduced nine metro link lines, and added four new taxi routes in high-demand areas. It also activated a bus priority system at key intersections, improving arrival times by up to 12%.
The RTA is also investing in a new generation of bus stations designed with modern engineering solutions that prioritize safety, accessibility, and multimodal integration. These stations aim to enhance pedestrian and cycling connectivity, offer inclusive access for People of Determination, and support the city’s goal of creating a seamless transport experience.
In line with Dubai’s long-term urban mobility strategy, the RTA continues to implement policies encouraging residents to reduce dependence on private vehicles and embrace alternative transport options, including public transit and shared mobility.
