Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation said it is closely monitoring an incident involving a fire in an electrical generator located outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Region following what authorities described as a drone strike.

FANR confirmed that the incident did not impact the safety of the nuclear facility or the operational readiness of its core systems.

In an official statement, the authority said there had been no release of radioactive material and that radiological safety levels remained within normal parameters, with no risk posed to the public or the environment. No injuries were reported.

The regulator said it is coordinating closely with the plant operator and relevant national authorities to verify all aspects of the incident and ensure the continued integrity of the plant’s systems.

“As part of its independent regulatory oversight, FANR is assessing the event in accordance with established national procedures and maintaining continuous monitoring of radiological conditions and plant status,” the authority said.

FANR also emphasized that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, licensed, and operated in line with the highest international nuclear safety and security standards, incorporating multiple independent protection systems to ensure safe operations under a wide range of conditions.

The authority reiterated that protecting the public, plant workers, and the environment remains its highest priority and said it would continue rigorous regulatory oversight of the facility.

FANR urged the public to rely on official sources for verified information and avoid circulating rumors or unconfirmed reports regarding the incident.

The Barakah plant is the Arab world’s first operational nuclear energy facility and plays a key role in the UAE’s long-term clean energy and energy diversification strategy.
