Both Qatar and Egypt signed a major deal on Thursday to construct a luxury real estate and tourism venture on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt as part of a larger $7.5 billion investment pledge by Qatar to boost the Egyptian economy.
The agreement is one of the biggest foreign real estate projects in Egyptian history and is an indication of a re-investment in Egypt by the Gulf investors in the face of the economic problems in the country, such as huge foreign debt and an increasing budget deficit.
According to Egypt Cabinet, the project will be located on Alam Al-Roum, an undeveloped 7.2 kilometers (4.4 miles) stretch of coastline, some 480 kilometers northwest of Cairo in the Matrouh Governorate of Egypt.
This is a coastal project valued at $29.7 billion, and it is led by Qatari Diar, the real estate arm of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund.
It is estimated that the investment will comprise approximately 1,985 hectares (4,900 acres) and will be developed into a year-round premier Mediterranean destination, including luxury residential neighborhoods, marinas, golf courses, educational facilities, including schools and universities, along with required public infrastructure and government amenities.
